SB Park Sarbojanin: Thakurpukur’s Heartbeat of Durga Puja
Tucked away in Thakurpukur, in the quieter southern reaches of Kolkata, SB Park Sarbojanin has spent over five decades proving that the biggest Puja stories aren’t always found under the brightest lights of Deshapriya Park or Mohammad Ali Park. Those who really know Kolkata’s Puja culture will tell you that the most genuine experiences are often found in neighbourhoods like Thakurpukur.
A Legacy Built on Imagination
Known popularly as State Bank Park, this Behala-Thakurpukur institution has never settled for the ordinary. S B Park Sarbojanin, which recently stepped into its 53rd year, has built its reputation on innovative concepts and a distinctive celebration style. Club President Sanjay Majumder has spoken proudly of how the Puja draws many lakhs of visitors every single day it runs.
When Ideas Meet the Idol
What sets SB Park apart is its willingness to turn the pandal into a canvas for bigger conversations. In 2023, the committee chose the theme “Elem Notun Deshe”—meaning “We have arrived in a new land.” Majumder explained that in a turbulent time shaped by politics, religion, capitalism, and the climate crisis, SB Park sought to reach for solutions through artistic imagination, inviting every state in the country to be represented on its banners, each in its own regional language.
Behind that vision stood a genuine creative ensemble: artist Ramananda Bandyopadhyay designing the idol, Shibshankar Das as chief designer of the central theme, Barun Kar handling light design, and Joy Sarkar composing the theme music—proof that a neighbourhood Puja can assemble talent on par with any of the city’s headline attractions.
The Ritual That Starts It All
Every SB Park journey begins months in advance, with the Khuti Puja—the ceremonial planting of a decorated bamboo pole at the exact spot where the pandal will rise. It stands as an invocation to the Goddess, the earth, and the community, a quiet declaration that the year’s creative labour is ready to begin. In recent years, this ritual has grown into a celebration of its own, complete with mantras, conch shells, and marigold decorations. Fittingly, one recent Khuti Puja season was marked by a cultural programme performed by blind and disabled students from the NGO NIP, a reminder that inclusion sits at the heart of the committee’s community spirit.
More Than a Pandal
SB Park’s story isn’t only about scale or spectacle—it’s about generations of Behala and Thakurpukur families who grew up walking these lanes during Puja, and who now bring their own children to do the same. That continuity, passed quietly from one generation to the next, is what gives SB Park Sarbojanin its heartbeat.
